He squeezed her and pressed his nose into her hair, breathing in deep. Even now, cloaked in their mutual anguish, she smelled like honey and hope. He waited until her breathing stabilized before speaking again.
“I need to know you aren’t going to lie to me anymore. I know we both get through life on lies, but we aren’t going to get through this one unless we can trust each other. I want to feel like I can trust you,” he said quietly. It felt so good to be holding her and a small part of him still feared she would smirk and tell him he was an idiot for believing this could be real.
But she didn’t. She just nodded and pulled back.
“No more lying,” she rasped in agreement. “Not even for dealing with other people. It’s too confusing.”
