Gael’s not Dead, or Continuity is for Cowards

Long time, no blog. It’s been hard to find the energy to write at all, and my efforts have been firmly on finishing Rotten Devil, which I had hoped to publish about a year ago. But now that Rotten Devil is done with alpha readers and out on the beta rounds, there isn’t much I can do for the next two weeks. So, let’s chat.

This book has been a particular beast. Not only is it just my second novel, but it is the first one that actually has to take into account the world that came before in book one. This shouldn’t be as irksome as it is, but I truly didn’t realize how spoiled I was by being able to just make up the world as I went along. And now I’m managing a fake calendar for my fake people to keep track of what is happening when in their fake lives. It’s pretty similar to having a toddler, except the toddler is a collection of maladjusted adults with guns. You’re doing great, sweeties!

I’m glad that an end is in sight for Rotten Devil—provided, of course, that my beta readers don’t rate it a big fat meh/10. I’m certainly happier with what I sent out to this group than with the smoking wreckage my alpha readers had to sift through. Most of all, I’m glad that I’m not totally burned out. Sure, I never want to look at Rotten Devil again, and I feel like my personal purgatory will be rewriting chapter five until my eyes bleed. But having a reprieve has given me some energy back, which I am promptly dumping into the book three attention pit. And maybe, just maybe, I’ll finally have the time, energy, and motivation to do the god damn cover reveal.

Until next time, travellers,

Gael
